A Discovery Flight is a real first lesson, not a sightseeing ride: you take the controls with a Certified Flight Instructor beside you the whole time. It is $265, and it is how nearly every Vortex student began.

Vortex is a small, personally run flight school with the availability, quality and professionalism you would expect from a much bigger one. That comes down to four things: the airplanes, the instructors, how we teach, and where we fly.
Five airplanes, kept flying
Three Cessna 172 Skyhawks, a technically advanced Cherokee 180 with dual Garmin G3X displays and an integrated autopilot, and a Citabria 7KCAB for tailwheel and aerobatics. Our 172F carries IFR-certified avionics and a dual-stack radio and navigation system, so students train on equipment that matches the rating they are chasing.
One instructor, one student
This is a small school on purpose. You fly with an instructor who knows where you left off, on a schedule built around your work and school week — including Saturdays and Sundays. Nobody hands you off to whoever happens to be free.
Instructors who have flown the work
Our four instructors bring a former staff sergeant with a Blackhawk crew who now flies King Airs and PC-12s, a Liberty University Part 141 graduate, and a chief pilot who learned in Alaskan bush and float planes. CFI, CFII and MEI credentials across the staff.

KLKU sits in quiet Central Virginia airspace over Lake Anna, well clear of the congestion at the busy fields. Less time waiting for a release, less time in the run-up queue — more of every paid hour spent actually flying.

A Discovery Flight is $265; beyond that Vortex quotes your training per student rather than advertising a headline number, because how often you fly moves the total more than anything else.
Common first questions
The questions every first-time student asks before they book.
01 Do I need any previous experience to start?
No. Most people who walk into Vortex have never touched the controls of an aeroplane, and a Discovery Flight is built exactly for that. You do not need a licence, a medical certificate or any ground study to take your first lesson — an instructor sits beside you the entire flight.
02 What is a Discovery Flight?
It is your first flying lesson, and it costs $265 at Vortex. You take the controls yourself with a Certified Flight Instructor on a second set beside you, and the time can be logged as dual instruction toward a certificate. There is no commitment afterwards — plenty of people take one to find out how it feels and leave it at that.
03 Is it safe?
Yes — training aircraft and training flights are among the most tightly regulated flying there is. You fly a Cessna 172, an aeroplane designed to take student handling and flown by more first-time pilots than any other type, and your instructor is on a full second set of controls the whole time. Vortex also simply does not go when the weather is not right; a cancelled lesson costs you a rescheduled evening, and that trade is never a close call.
04 How much does it cost to earn a Private Pilot License?
Vortex quotes it per student rather than advertising a single number, because how often you fly moves the total more than any rate does — a student flying twice a week finishes on far fewer hours than one flying monthly and re-learning each time.
